The word quilling itself came from the English word quill, which means a bird feather. In fact, this is a very beautiful and simple type of creativity that does not require tangible costs and special skills.
There is a legend that quilling was invented by monks in the XIV century, whose duties included pruning of book gilded edges. They got thin gilded ribbons, which they wrapped at the ends of bird feathers. A peculiar not tightly rolled curl was obtained. From such curls in poor churches made compositions for the design of church utensils. Later in the 19th century, Quilling became the favorite pastime of noble ladies, and in the next century they simply forgot about him. Nowadays, this beautiful type of creativity has been revived with renewed vigor, from a simple hobby, Quilling again became art.
Today, there are many quilling lessons on the Internet, thanks to which you can learn a lot and do truly magnificent crafts. For example, here Koteko. Lessons are presented how to make quilling cats and at the same time master this technique quickly enough.
In Russian, it could be called a paper coating, but this is too simple definition. No matter how simple the quilling technique is, to perform work, you need to be very diligent and be patient. After all, in order to make even a small composition you will have to spend a lot of time making such curls that the monks did. Each such element is customary to call a module, of which any work in the quilling technique is gathering like a mosaic.
If you want to do quilling, you will need:
• Quilling schemes (beginners can not do without them);
• thin paper ribbons made of bilateral colored paper with a width of 1.5 to 10 millimeters;
• a special rod for wrapping paper, which, if necessary, can be replaced with a wooden skewer or toothpick;
• tweezers with which you will hold the finished module when applying glue;
• a ruler-traffic with round holes of different sizes;
• Manicure scissors, PVA glue, pencil and ruler.
Nowadays, in art shops or online stores, you can buy both paper and a set of quilling tools.
