Who, looking at the zoo at Lynx or Puma, did not dream of holding such a cat at home? Huge, compared to ordinary domestic cats, fluffy, similar to wild, but at the same time sociable and quite affectionate … if not a lynx, then at least a forest cat.
Among the large domestic cats are more than the rest on forest cats, representatives of the Maine Kun breed are similar — these are beautiful animals with thick long wool and cute brushes on the ears. Today, buying such a cat will not be difficult if, for example, visit the nurseries Maine Kunov St. Petersburg, where you can choose a thoroughbred cat.
The name of the breed comes from the American state of Maine, where it was displayed and the English word COON, which translates like a raccoon: gray in black stripes of color and the dimensions of the cat make it really a little like a raccoon. Cats of this breed can reach 15 kg of weight, although on average about 6 — 10 kg is usually gained. Height at the withers up to 40 cm.
The ancestors of Maine Kun were wild forest cats, which brushes on the tips of the ears and wayward character did not allow to forget. But these cats are not “savages” at all — they are quite smart, independent and live their lives. Maine Kun will not be an affectionate cat, which follows the owner on the heels and constantly requires attention, he assigns the role of an equal fellow person, allowing himself to take care of and spend time together. Maine Kuna is very calm and peaceful, are not aggressive to children, belong to their pranks condescendingly, realizing that these are “human kittens”.
Cats of this breed need the opportunity to explore and open a new one, it is cramped in a city apartment, at least sometimes it is worth taking them out a suburb or take them out for a walk to the park. The wool between the pillows on the paws will not let Maine Kun are overcool even in winter, and the games in the snow will be happy, they will give vigor and help maintain shape.
However, Maine Kun is not the largest breed of domestic cats, there is a larger giant — this is a savannah that comes from crossing domestic cats and servo. At a height at the withers up to 60 cm, the savannahs reach a weight of almost 20 kg! They are smart, active and inquisitive. Savannah inherited the smooth wool of the sand color from the wild ancestors in small dark spots, a slender graceful body and large thoughtful eyes. But few can afford to keep such a cat houses, today Savannah is the most expensive breed in the world.
